Objective
The European Union has set a target of 12% market share of renewable energy in 2010 total primary energy consumption. In addressing this objective, wind farm appears to be an efficient technology. Large-scale wind energy is jeopardizing the security of electricity supply due to: The volatility of this generation and the sensitivity that this technology exhibits to voltage dips among others.
The solutions to these problems require an integrated approach: Technical and regulatory solutions and standardisation guidelines. Wind farms clusters will lead to the establishment of a new type of control centre, the Wind Farm Cluster Management System (WCMS), which aggregates the operational data and creates the desired schedules, facilitates energy and power control, as well as the reactive power provision, enabling wind farms to perform closer to conventional power plants. The WCMS concept will address the problems relating to wind volatility.
