Objective An Industrial-Academic Chemistry Nursery for Economic Growth There is an critical downturn in the number of quality Ph.D. students in the multidisciplinary area of selective synthesis in Europe. This area is of paramount importance in supporting European Chemical Industries and underpins new emerging technologies including Chemical-Biology and Nanaotechnology. Should the number of Ph.D. students in this area fall below its current value of ~1000 then a major downturn in European economic competitiveness ca n be expected. Eight Ph.D. degrees featuring multi-site multi-sector training (288 person-months total), by leading-edge hosts, in this area will combat this trend. The training comprises 24 months in a lead Host, 10 months of cross-training in a second lab and normally a two month stay in industrial partner site within a 48 month period. Internationally leading groups in Nottingham, Geneva, Sassari and Dortmund Universities head the consortium, awarding multidisciplinary Ph.D. qualifications (ultimate ly a joint degree). The academic partners have exceptional track records in training high quality Ph.D. students and exchanging international research students and collaborating in the last 5 years. A Forum of industrial members (encompassing large indus tries to SMEs and trade organisations) will provide additional industrial training through project collaborations and placements. Specialist training will be supported by acquisition of complimentary skills, short courses promoting interactions with emer ging technologies in chemical-biology and nanotechnology. Technology and skill transfer (academic/academic and academic/industrial) within the programme will be maximised through an annual network meeting and extensive use of leading-edge remote visual/vid eo learning (elements of which will be accessible to those outside the programme). The highly linked training proposed affords numerous opportunities to increase cohesion in EST training within the ERA.
