Objectif The overall goal of the project is to integrate the simulation of fluid flow, mixing and heat release in internal combustion engines into the development cycle through the use of HPCN.In order to make further advances in the development of piston engines, including the lowering of harmful emissions and the improvement of fuel economy, it will be necessary to make increasing use of computational fluid dynamics. At present there are two main obstacles to transferring existing relevant basic research to development centres. The first obstacle is the long computational time currently required for the realistic simulation of time-dependent flow fields and turbulent combustion under real-engine conditions. The second obstacle is the time and cost required to generate, modify and control the computational grid. The aim of the project is to demonstrate real-engine simulations within one week. These simulations will include the necessary pre- and post-processing and should allow an accurate prediction of velocity fields, turbulence, fuel distribution at ignition point and heat release. This is the necessary condition for achieving the required improvement in the development processes of internal combustion engines from the standpoint of engine designers.
