REMAP is a revision management system that allows project teams to work co-operatively on the design ensuring consistency between the different subdomains. The design and construction of large buildings or industrial plants is a large scale problem typically implemented by a project consortium of several companies at different locations, often also of diverse nationalities. Each company is specialized in certain engineering areas, with a main contractor holding responsibility for the co-ordination of the consortium and the execution of the project. During the design process, technical drawings and documents are frequently modified and have to be adopted among the partners. Not only a time-consuming process that binds significant resources but also highly error-prone and often resulting in delayed delivery of the plant. REMAP improves the organization of these processes through a Revision Management System, saving cost and time and increasing quality, leading to better results in general. REMAP is typically used in the planning phase of a construction project, according to the definition given in the German standard VDI 2222 for Clarification of Tasks, Conceptual Design and Embodiment/Detailed Design. REMAP allows distributed teams to work on their individual tasks providing not only easy accessibility of all relevant data across the team but also ensuring that any modifications made by one party are forwarded immediately to all who may be affected by them. Thus REMAP introduces concurrent engineering on a level not available in plant design at present.
