The drive towards the "intelligent home" and the interconnected, information society, are ways that communications developments are taking place and will expand over the next decade. A major driver for growth is the deregulation of energy utilities and the introduction of competitive markets for residential customers. Utility services are activities whose data exchange requirements are small in comparison with much more advanced services. They can be financially beneficial to customers and utilities when provided as part of an overall package. ETHOS tested customer acceptance of specific services, and developed a wide range of multimedia value added services using EHS based communications. Approximately 700, separate pilot installations have been made in the UK, France, Italy and Denmark. Services have been developed using the EHS standard for in-home communications with the aim of demonstrating the value of two way communication links within and external to customer premises and of identifying routes for exploiting the technology. Customers valued the provided services. Market surveys have been carried out among residential customers and utilities, which have identified target applications. It is anticipated that the major exploitation of EHS based systems will be through the converged protocol. The field trials for EHS carried out by ETHOS have built a platform for launching and marketing intelligent home applications to residential markets. The trials have been designed to achieve cost-effective products, which can assist utilities in improving relationships with customers. In countries, where competitive utility supply markets exist, utilities also expect to obtain business advantages and to lead the market. Project URL: http://www.fen.bris.ac.uk/elec/ETHOS/Ethos.htm
