CHIC is a distribution system for newspapers and magazines through news-stands which uses existing technology to improve quality and competitiveness in the business process. It addresses the need which publishers and distributors have in this sector to reduce structural inefficiencies and increase competitiveness, especially in the light of the growing threat to paper-based publications from falling readership and the fundamental shift towards electronic publications which is becoming apparent. In particular, CHIC focuses on the need for accurate information about sales and returns, enabling publishers to increase the former and reduce the latter. CHIC is a fully electronic system designed to be particularly easy to use, to encourage take-up even by non-computer literate news-stand agents. It incorporates Interactive Voice Response which allows news-agents to communicate their data via telephone to a telephone at the publisher's offices. Thoroughly tested with publishers and distributors in both Greece and Italy, results have demonstrated that CHIC produces a significant reduction in returns, and associated financial benefits. It creates a new relationship between the various players in the system, enabling information to be both transmitted in a timely manner, and acted upon appropriately. CHIC is targeted both at large publishers and distribution networks as well as SMEs (two versions are in fact available, according to the nature of the client). Adopting it will help its users become more cost-effective and competitive, through significantly improving the overall efficiency of the distribution system.
