INK is a pioneering, fully digital interactive system for in-room hotel services. It provides access to multimedia data through interactive terminals connected to one or more video servers. A full range of services, from on-demand video to bill payment, is accessible to customers through a user-friendly, easy-to-use application operated using a remote control. The INK system consists of high quality personal computer (PC) terminals which have access to any multimedia content residing on a video server. The terminals communicate with the server over a high speed asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network which uses a resilient steaming protocol for efficient video transmission. This protocol was designed and implemented specifically for INK. The server is based on a redundant array of inexpensive discs (RAID) and consequently has high capacity storage and high speed data retrieval. Motion Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) video encoders and decoders have been developed specifically to manipulate digitized video content in real time. These compression techniques reduce storage and transmission bandwidth requirements. Graphical user interface (GUI)-based applications are built on top of the system and provide a user-friendly interface even for non-experienced users together with suitable input devices such as remote controllers and touch screens.
