Training and Research in the Fundamentals of Inflammatory Disease

Objective

Chronic inflammatory diseases affect 30% of the EU population and can affect most tissues in the body. Important examples are rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. These diseases have a high mortality rate and high morbidity with low quality of life. Identification of the processes central to the development of different inflammatory diseases has proven difficult as it involves understanding how immune cells interact with each other and with stromal cells in complex tissue microenvironments. Under the Marie Curie EST Fellowship scheme inflammation research groups at the Universities of Birmingham, Kiel, Utrecht, Essen, Turku, Berlin and Amsterdam will cooperate to offer multidisciplinary training in the molecular and cellular basis of chronic inflammatory diseases using different disease models. The aim of the training and research is to achieve a better understanding of the immunopathogenesis of chronic inflammation by studying organ specific inflammation and identifying tissue specific and ge neric events leading to persistence of inflammation. The long term objective of the research is better diagnosis, prognosis and tailor-made treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases. TRIFID is a mono-parner EST programme hosted at Birmingham University as a European Centre of Excellence in inflammation, with interactions with complementary groups in Europe. TRIFID includes three 12 month and six 36 month training and research fellowships. The latter will lead to a PhD and include a 9 month stay in one of t he European partner institutions to receive training in specific skills and ensure that they experience networking, a multidisciplinary approach to research and the benefits of cooperation within Europe. TRIFID will generate a cohort of high calibre young scientists with structured and state of the art training in inflammation. The ultimate aim of TRIFID is to allow the partners to work together and develop a Euro-PhD programme in inflammation.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
