Process improvement through configuration management

Objective

ProTec has to deliver software according to user requirements that frequently change due to the nature of the clients' business. This makes it increasingly difficult to keep control of critical project parameters like effort, cost and time. Additional challenges for a higher efficiency are the necessary cultural change towards a team oriented development process and the re-use of common software modules.
This is a common business concern and the main focus of the experiment whose objectives are more reliable commitments to our customers and improved product quality and maintenance. These are all key factors for better customer satisfaction which again is our strongest and most important directive for future business improvement.

THE EXPERIMENT

The achievement of the objective above requires the following steps:

a) Introduction to configuration management practices, identification and installation of an appropriate tool.
b) Building up the configuration tree of existing software from the baseline project, re-usable modules and development lines from customer requests.
c) Monitor the development of customer specific modules according to the fulfilment of the above objective.

The experiment will be performed around the development of a simulation system enabling companies to elaborate waste management concepts and waste balances according to national and international law regulating waste disposal.

ProTec GmbH employs 12 people, 3 of them are involved in the project team.

EXPECTED IMPACT AND EXPERIENCE

ProTec expects to gain know-how on managing development projects for customised software systems and on maintaining these systems in line with changing user requirements. The anticipated benefits will be an efficient, team-oriented development process, leading to better product quality and enabling ProTec to make reliable commitments to customer requests.
