Enhanced protocol test system for host tasks

Objetivo

SKELTON's Telecommunications Protocol Analyser has been developed to simulate and monitor telecommunications protocol traffic over a wide range of physical interfaces including ISDN, ATM, DECT e.t.c. The product success has led the existing software modules of the Testing System to reach their limits with problems in version control and maintenance, particularly in the extension of the system to support new multiple physical interfaces for High speed networks including ATM, Intelligent Networks (IN) and Access Networks (AN). New features are difficult to add, without affecting existing features. Hence it is imperative to generalise the functionality for new applications. To implement the new modules it is necessary to establish a modern and expandable development environment, that can be used for future enhancements and also as a base for the software development cycle within the company as whole. This will be achieved by maximum use of 4th generation code generators, CASE tools and platform independent libraries. Software source and version control will be implemented within this environment and linked to the development tool chain.

THE EXPERIMENT

The objective of this experiment is to extend the existing Protocol Test System for Host Tasks, with the implementation of a specific module. Consequently the experiment will introduce the use of 4th generation code generators, CASE tools for real time telecommunication systems and platform independent libraries. Software source and version control will be implemented within this environment and linked to the development tool chain. The resulting design methodology will be documented in accordance to the Skelton Quality Policy. This is considered to be an excellent basis to establish a new software design methodology. Within the proposed experiment SKELTON will select and use advanced CASE tools supporting the whole software life cycle for real time applications. Eventually SKELTON will seek to implement an integrated multi-user and multi-project systems engineering environment for turning formalised requirements into high quality real time systems supporting the following software life cycle activities; Requirements Capture and Traceability, Configuration Management and Project Management, Performance Analysis and Design Evaluation, Document Generation and Reverse Engineering. To assess the results of the experiment SKELTON will utilise software metrics and to validate and maximise the benefits it will apply the new tools, methods and standards to the baseline project as well.

EXPECTED IMPACT AND EXPERIENCE

The new development environment, will not only affect SKELTON as a company, but it will also promote, and perhaps force in some cases, the use of the new tools within the community of collaborating organisations, with which SKELTON forms an integral supply chain. Therefore a substantial effort will be made to disseminate the results to collaborating companies and customers and to provide technical assistance and support for the possible adoption of these advanced software practices by them.
