B decays and new effective field theories

Objectif

The experimental results provided by the existing B-factories (Babar, Belle) and by then ones that will be built in Europe (LHC) will urge a deeper theoretical comprehension. The target of the proposal is 1- to achieve a comprehension of B-meson decays dev eloping new effective field theories, 2- to provide a stringent test of the CKM matrix and so reveal eventual New Physics contributions. The two targets are related one another as new approaches are necessary in order to achieve a deeper understanding. Recently a new effective field theory has been proposed which is called SCET (Soft Collinear Effective Theory) which seems very promising. In this framework the collinear contributions of the products of B-decays are treated separately from the rest of degree s of freedom. In this way collinear logs are summed up and new relevant matrix elements are pointed out. The approach suits perfectly for both inclusive and exclusive decays. It is important however to achieve a precision comparable to the one of the experimental data on as many processes as possible. The centres in which I will practice are deeply involved in this research. I. Stewart at MIT is one of the first proposer of SCET. I expect to work on this subject and so practice these new concepts on the analysis of observables in B-decays. In ECM-UB, Barcelona, the group of J. Soto is also involved in the analysis of the products of B factories though the development of effective theories. His attention is particularly devoted to the study of Heavy Quarkonia and to the decays of their decays. SCET will be useful also to analyze the exclusive decays of these particles systems.
