Telecommunications software metrics approach

Objective

Software defects in products revealed after installation at customers premises represent disturbances both for the customer and for the product provider. This may in turn lead to lost business opportunities.

THE EXPERIMENT

The overall goal of the TELMET project is to improve the quality and productivity of telecommunication software systems development by introducing metrics in the testing and inspection processes. In addition, the project will act as the first step in an ambitious effort to advance in maturity from qualitative to quantitative goal setting.

The technical objectives are as follows:

- To identify and define software metrics to support the primary management goals.
- To analyse the effect of quantitative goal setting and measurement in improving current testing and inspection practices.
- To validate the chosen metrics in order to implement post PIE actions and to correct decisions that have been taken during the PIE.

EXPECTED IMPACT AND EXPERIENCE

Expected results are improved and quantified SW process, higher product quality, minimised development project risks. Gained experience and knowledge of SW metrics in the organisation is expected. After completion of the PIE, the results and lessons learnt will be made available for the other development sections within the company.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.
