Objective
The organometallic chemistry of palladium is a research field of great importance and enormous potential worldwide, mainly due to its applications in organic synthesis. Arylpalladium complexes are especially important, as they are involved in many catalytic carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond forming reactions. It is commonly observed that the presence of a suitable substituent in ortho to the Pd atom influences the reactivity of the complex and the formation of organic compounds. In this project we aim to extend this successful chemistry to polypalladated arene complexes of general formula [1,3,5-C6R3(PdXL2)n], where n=1-3 and R is a functionalized organic group. The target complexes will be synthesised through oxidative addition reactions of the corresponding polyhalogenated arenes 1,3,5-C6R3X3 (X= I, Br) to Pd(0) compounds. The reactivity of the resulting (poly)palladated complexes towards unsaturated molecules, such as alkenes, alkynes, isocyanides and carbon monoxide will be investigated, with the aim of obtaining new polypalladated complexes resulting from insertion reactions and/or organic compounds of interest resulting from decomposition reactions. Some preliminary results have already been obtained by the applicant, who is currently carrying out a short visit in the host research group. Possible applications of this research in the development of catalytic processes in organic synthesis will be pursued as well. The project also involves the extensive application of modern NMR techniques to the structural characterization of the products, as well as to the investigation of dynamic processes, reaction mechanisms and, in general, to the resolution of problems in organometallic chemistry.
