The EU and the Building up of its Neighbors: Effects on Regional Development of Reforms in “Employment and Social” and “Industrial and Enterprise” Policies in Turkey and Ukraine

In line with the objective of the scheme and those stated in the research proposal, this training by research has been designed to establish the fellow in the academic world and boost the fellow's competitiveness on the job market through exposure to academic life.

In particular the fellow is expected to increase his qualification by the following actions:

- conduct an independent research on the role of informal economies in economic development of Turkey and Ukraine,
- manage a research project, including all daily aspects of a research like organise a survey and manage research assistants,
- acquire new contacts with other universities,
- acquire competencies on a new country.

The fellow's PhD was based on Ukraine, where he had conducted extensive fieldwork. The current project wants to compare past and current findings on Ukraine with findings on Turkey.

To achieve the objectives the fellow has carried out, during the first period:

-literature survey (on post-USSR and Turkish development),
- institutional analysis (macro data and indicators to understand the regional differences in the two countries),
- worked to a survey (elaborated a set of questions, discussed them with local research institutes),
- large scale survey (in 3 main Ukrainian and Turkish regions, with a total of 1100 interviews),
- fieldwork (both in Turkey and Ukraine, with interviews with key informants from the government, researchers and analysts),
- interviews (with informants from households in Ukraine and Turkey),
- managed research assistants,
- financial aspects (managed the day-to-day financial issues of the project),
- delivered lectures and conference presentations (to make new contacts, discuss methodology and research findings and disseminate results),
- prepared conference panels (to establish contacts with other universities and increase team working skills),
- prepared co-publications and panels with other researchers from other universities,
- continued collecting material on Ukraine,
- extensively visited different regions of Turkey and Ukraine in order to choose the fieldwork (Istanbul, Gaziantep and Diyarbakir in Turkey, Kiev, Odessa and Lviv in Ukraine),
- studied the local languages (Ukrainian and Turkish).
