Space physics with the STEREO mission: structure and evolution of coronal mass ejections and their interaction with the interplanetary medium

Objectif

The aim of the present proposal is to lead a research project on space physics at the Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) of the University of California at Berkeley (USA), under the supervision of Prof. Stuart D. Bale. The return phase will be held at the Lab oratory of Space Studies and Instrumentation in Astrophysics (LESIA) at the Paris/Meudon Observatory (France), under the supervision of Dr. Milan Maksimovic. For this research I will investigate the physical properties of the interplanetary medium using da ta from the STEREO mission that will be launched in February 2006.The objective of this mission is to advance the understanding of the three-dimensional structure and evolution of solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and their interaction with the interpla netary medium and terrestrial magnetosphere. For this to be performed, imaging, radio, and in situ measurements from two identical, stereoscopically-spaced spacecraft will be combined. During my PhD thesis, I worked on the physics of the solar wind and the interplanetary medium in both theoretical and experimental aspects. The STEREO mission will provide unique measurements for the study of the perturbations of this medium. In the frame of this proposal, my research project on STEREO will be focused on three main topics:1) study of the interplanetary magnetic clouds associated with coronal mass ejections, using the technique of thermal noise spectroscopy,2) combining wave and particle data for relating the plasma wave activity to the particle velocity distrib ution functions in regions such as:- electron beams producing radio bursts,- foreshock regions associated with CMEs or corotating interaction regions, 3) studying in detail the solar wind structure, with emphasis on the electron distribution functions.
