NEMESIS is: a set of reports analysing the feasibility of transferring advanced image analysis algorithms, designed into a software product dedicated to video postproduction and multimedia content creation; and a set of demonstrations illustrating the capabilities of such tools for semi-automatically manipulating and modifying image sequences on an object basis and merging virtual (3-dimensional and 2-dimensional) data into live video. The main characteristics and functionality of NEMESIS have been devised. A thorough comparison of the product and existing software has been achieved. This comparison led to the conclusion that NEMESIS tools would enable up to 60 % time gain and 40 % cost reduction in the postproduction work required to produce advertisements.. First of all, the tools developed allow manipulation of video on an object basis. For example, in a video representing a man playing tennis, the player can be extracted from the original video and replaced by another character. Secondly, these tools rely on an MPEG-4 compatible model of data representation making it possible to encode video on an object basis instead of a pixel basis and capable of coping with 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional data. Different tools for video manipulation and 3-dimensional manipulation have been developed. The work focuses on applications in the domain of postproduction (special effects) and multimedia content-creation software markets. These markets are rapidly evolving. They are characterized by an increasing need for products capable of easily manipulating and modifying moving images. In this regard, the object-oriented approach of algorithms designed for NEMESIS constitutes a technological breakthrough allowing market differentiation. Moreover, these markets are characterized by a need for products capable of manipulating both 3-dimensional data (virtual objects) and video. NEMESIS features several solutions in this regard.
