Objectif
COST 514's main objectives are to initiate and promote the development of ferroelectric thin films with and for European industries and, in particular, to encourage fundamental research to resolve technological problems that are at the origin of the present reduced commercial diffusion of these products.
There are in Europe many research groups at universities and industries in the field of ferroelectric thin films, but, for the most part, working in an isolated manner. Because of the complexity of the problem and its interdisciplinary nature, a European co-ordinated effort in the science and the technology of ferroelectric thin films was unanimously assessed as potentially beneficial to this new field.
The proposed lines of research are as follows :
Materials - Pb(Zr,Ti)O3-based materials, BaTiO3-based compounds, Bi 4Ti 3O 12, Pb5Ge3O11, SiNb3, complex perovskites, new compositions. Materials for given applications (composition-structure-additives).
Processing - Research on various processing methods : sol-gel, MOD, MOCVD, reactive sputtering (magnetron, ion beam, assisted, etc.), laser ablation, development of characterisation procedures and comparison of films processed in various methods for development of processing at acceptable temperature for process integration, and the systematic study of densification and crystallisation processes. Problems of reproducibility and yield.
Integration - Switching mechanisms, possible reduction of coercive field with relation to defect chemistry of the films and dielectric strength, basic mechanisms such as domain wall contribution, phase transition mechanisms in thin layers, detailed studies of piezoelectric properties, pyroelectric properties, acousto-optic properties, etc.
Failure and degradation prevention - Electro-chemical and electro-mechanical degradation processes, fatigue, retention, breakdown and the reduction of ageing problems.
Applications - Piezoelectric sensors and actuators, micro-electro-mechanical devices, infra-red sensors, acousto-optic and electro-optic devices, memories, modelling, integration, etc.
Current status
The activities are performed within the frame of four group projects with following titles and topics :
Group 1 : Pulsed laser ablation deposition of ferroelectric thin films
Promising technologies for thin film deposition are studied.
Group 2 : Ferroelectric ceramic thin films for SAW devices
The aim is to obtain by SI1-Gel and Laser Ablation techniques the lead titanate ferroelectric ceramic thin films suitable for use as substrates for Surface Acoustic Waves devices.
Group 3 : Capacitors for a ferroelectric capacitor stack with direct contact to silicon
The formation of such a capacitor stack is investigated.
Group 4 : Reliability of ferroelectric thin films
Reliability of the films is thoroughly studied using various characterisation and diagnostics techniques.
Group 5 : Optical and non-linear optical properties of ferroelectric thin films. Study of PLZT films obtained by PLAD, by Raman spectroscopy and related techniques.
