Exploitable results

The VAT project involves developing a new psychological assessment methodology, aimed at personnel selection and evaluation, based on virtual reality (VR). The project produces a powerful psychological testing tool capable of direct application in a number of different fields. Present-day psychological testing is still largely based on simple paper questionnaires and on an evaluation of the results made by psychologists. This is not the most effective method of assessment, often producing inaccurate results for measuring practical abilities and aptitudes. When used to make a choice between candidates for a specific professional profile, it can mean high additional costs and significant waste of efforts. Virtual reality offers a means of bypassing the variables introduced by the human factor, and can be effective during testing sessions in creating conditions very similar to those the candidate will experience in the real-life occupation. The way the subjects react to the VR simulations (providing scenarios often impossible to recreate in reality) gives an in-depth information on their attitudes and psychological traits. The final result of VAT project is an avant-garde methodology of personality testing that will enhance the level of accuracy of psychological measuring tools and also simplify the initial steps in induction and training. A deep and smart method of analysis is particularly in demand dealing with high-risk professions such as policing, firefighting or piloting, where a deep evaluation of personal capabilities is essential. The three pilot applications developed within the project take into account a representative sample of such occupations. VAT focuses on personal computer (PC)-compatible applications, in order to make the final product available at an affordable cost.
