No Longer Researching About Us Without Us

Final Activity Report Summary - NRWU (No Longer Researching About Us Without Us)

In this research project people with intellectual disabilities were encouraged to become co-researchers in a process where they had control over the research agenda, including research topics and how data would be collected and interpreted. Seven projects were completed using an inclusive research approach throughout Ireland. For each project, whether it was documenting how people with intellectual disabilities were running a local coffee shop or how students at Trinity College with intellectual disabilities explored what it was like to be a Trinity student, the focus of the research was on people with intellectual disabilities gaining ownership over the process. The outcomes of the project demonstrated how people with intellectual disabilities could take control of the research agenda living up to the title of the project which was 'no researching about us without us'.

This project showed that people with intellectual disabilities in Ireland had much to teach other groups in other parts of the world. A group of project researchers presented a poster presentation on anti-bullying strategies at the IASSID congress on intellectual disabilities in Cape Town in 2008. They won a prize for the best research poster competing against traditional researchers internationally.
