An environment for a virtual hypermedia factory

Objectif

The main objective of the Virtual Hypermedia Factory (VHF) project is to demonstrate an advanced information production and dissemination environment for the electronic publishing industry. VHF aims to allow publishers to simplify the writing phase and publisher/author interaction, and also to bundle related documents in hypermedia form.

VHF will be a network-based electronic publishing environment used to support publishers' technological needs and services in the areas of cultural heritage and tourism. VHF users will be able to start from an initial bundled package of electronic books, and buy or build their own electronic publication in which the content is customised to suit their own individual needs.

The VHF demonstration environment addresses the needs of several specific domains, namely:
- electronic publishing.
- cultural heritage information dissemination.
- electronic distribution of tourism information.

Using such an electronic publishing environment, information publishers can simplify the authoring process to share products among different specialised markets, without duplicating their own multimedia input into individual publications. For publishers this means reduced effort in information production and dissemination, with consequent economic savings.
As a first step a basic VHF environment will be experimented with using an ISDN network infrastructure for the delivery environment, and an ATM-based one for the production environment. It will be built upon a basic kernel of integrated tools for:
- multimedia document publishing.
- multimedia-based document browsing.
- multimedia-based information retrieval.
- security, accounting and trans-border publishing services.

The various project partners each have specific objectives in the exploitation of the results, as follows:
- Liguori Editore, Encyclopaedia Universalis, MSH, to exploit a new authoring and distribution approach and business model.
- Olivetti, to improve its position as a solutions and services provider via ATM and Internet (Iunet, Infostrada and Telemedia) delivery channels.
- First, Intrasoft, Olivetti, to develop commercial software packages for the specific markets of tourism and museum systems.
- Centro Servici Alberghi Capresi, European Profiles SA, will exploit a new sales approach in the tourism market
- Austrian Architectural Centres, Albertina, Soprintendenza Archeologica delle Province di Napoli e Caserta, to make use of new methods of distributing publications, advertising special events, etc.
- CNR, University of Technology in Vienna, University of Patras, whose involvement will strengthen the technical and scientific knowledge base of the European research operators.

The following actions will maximise the exploitation of project results:
- specific actions to promote VHF capabilities and competitiveness inside and outside Europe, e.g. relationship with specialised organisations and industries, technology transfer workshops, etc.
- education of new users (publishers, cultural heritage and tourism organisations) in using the new technologies to improve work patterns and habits.
- promotional actions towards potential customers that are clearly identified from the beginning of the project, such as publishers, cultural heritage and tourism organisations.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classe les projets avec EuroSciVoc, une taxonomie multilingue des domaines scientifiques, grâce à un processus semi-automatique basé sur des techniques TLN. Voir: Le vocabulaire scientifique européen.
