Objectif
A major technological challenge facing the processing industries is the need to increase plant flexibility and provide wider operating windows. This is particularly important in highly demanding situations where processes are subject to varying raw material properties, changing market needs and specifications and fluctuating operating conditions due to equipment or process degradation. The industrial necessity for techniques which enhance process performance will require new methodologies to be adopted which can be used across a spectrum of industrial processing unit operations and on a wide range of products. Particularly exciting are the multivariate data analysis methodologies which are appropriate for a diverse range of industrial problems, including plant-wide performance monitoring. Radical improvements can be made to the quality and consistency of existing production. However, it is not simply a case of more automation, but of implementing these new techniques for data handling and interpretation at all levels, from process operator, production engineer through to plant manager and senior management.
The objective of PROGNOSIS (Process Diagnostics for Plant Performance Enhancement), is to demonstrate, the improvements that can be achieved in plant performance monitoring, through the application of Multivariate Statistical Process Control (MSPC) to a number of production processes, and products. The basis of MSPC are the statistical projection techniques of principal components analysis (PCA) and Projection to Latent Structures (PLS). Through the extension of these techniques, batch and plant-wide MSPC applications can be achieved through multi-way PCA and PLS and multi-block PCA and PLS respectively.
The major benefits expected to accrue will be an increase in asset utilisation; an increase in productivity through increase yields/throughput and the manufacture of more consistent product.
Through improved process monitoring, the potential for a higher proportion of first-time-right production will be increased, resulting in a reduction in raw material usage and energy consumption. This ultimately should have a major impact on the environment.
Exploitation of the proven technologies is a key element of the project. A primary aim of the project is to effectively transfer MSPC to industry. The end-user partners have all identified potential in their own companies and are primarily concerned with in-house application. Demonstration of the success of these applications will encourage the more rapid spread of applications within each of the companies.
