MOLECULAR MATERIALS AND FUNCTIONAL POLYMERS FOR ADVANCED DEVICES

Objective

COST 518 is primarily concerned with the study, preparation and improvement of molecules or polymers able to give two- or three-dimensional organised systems and showing show two, or even more, functionalities (e.g. electric and simultaneously magnetic properties). As the next step this Action is focused on fabrication of devices based on these novel materials, e.g. :
gas sensors
pressure sensors
magnetic sensors and magnetic imaging
submicron electronics : FET, Schottky diodes
devices suitable for optical or magnetic storage
energy storage (battery, supercapacitors)
screens and displays
electromagnetic shielding
holography

The subject is strongly interdisciplinary in nature, embracing physics, chemistry, medicine microelectronics, aerospace, biotechnology, automotive, etc.
Contacts with industry have made it possible to define priorities :
non-linear optical organic and polymer materials
liquid crystals for displays
ferro-, pyro-, and piezo-electric liquid crystals and polymers
molecular and polymer ferromagnets
intrinsic conducting and semiconducting molecular systems
chemical sensors and biosensors

Three working packages are foreseen :
dyes, electro-optics, non-linear optical organic and polymer materials
pigments and colorants
dyes for optical data storage
development of new chromophores for telecommunications
nanotechnologies for new integrated optical devices
photopolymerisable materials
bistable systems in LB films (information storage)
non-linear optics with LC polymers and conjugated polymers
photoconductors such as molecular photodiodes
electroluminescence of conjugated polymers
insulating, conducting and ferromagnetic molecular and polymer systems
electrical insulators
conducting adhesives for electronic applications
conducting polymers as electrodes of great stability and long life in batteries
intercalated highly conducting low-dimensional systems
electronically conducting liquid crystals
molecular semiconductors in thin films for electronic devices (radicals)
conductivity in mesomorphic systems
molecular and polymer ferromagnets for telecommunication applications
bistable systems for data storage
magnetism and transparency (or luminescence)
spin induced by light
chemical sensors based on the modification of the preceding properties
conducting polymers
polymer electrolyte films
metallo-organic complexes

Within these three work-packages, the focus is put on the following phases :
Organised or amorphous thin films (submicronic)
Nanostructures and nanoparticles in amorphous matrices
Liquid crystals

Current status
Though the MoU came into force in 1994, this Action collected the five necessary signatures only in June 1996. The launch meeting, at which a Management Committee will be established, is planned for February 1997.
