SPAM incorporates a three-step approach: a software evaluation, a process assessment and a results correlation activity. This provides a comprehensive and repeatable approach for assessing how portable a software product is and how geared towards portability is the development process which produced it. With this information, organisations are better able to estimate the costs and timeframe for porting an application to a target platform and to produce portable software in the first place. To help organisations involved in all aspects of portability, SPAM training programmes have been created to train assessors in how to undertake portability assessments and to educate software developers in how to use SPAM to improve their porting programmes.
