A virtual enterprise organiser-development of advanced GroupWare tools supporting synergy among enterprises in the emerging global market

Objective

In order to stay successful, industries have to separate major parts of their organization and production (outsourcing strategies) to independent suppliers or sister companies, which are better suited to such tasks (cost-effectiveness, quality, near-the-market location). For such practices however to become fully effective, tools that support co-ordinated actions are needed.

VENTO will establish a virtual enterprise model, that illustrates the interaction between suppliers, distributors, sub-contractors, etc. According to the rules of this model advanced existing groupware tools will be adapted and integrated to a system, which will act in the virtual enterprise allowing the better synergy of composite groups (information exchange, time coordination, communication).

The technological suppliers in the consortium are providing professional groupware tools, that will be adapted and integrated in VENTO to fit the project's scope. Thus, they are very committed to a successful implementation. The technological suppliers will be supported by a research institute with wide knowledge in enterprise modelling. During the whole life-cycle of the project end-users who form a virtual enterprise will be involved. They will set the requirements, verify the results of the work packages and demonstrate the final system.

The modules of VENTO will comply to the reference model of the Workflow Management Coalition, thus guaranteeing a modular structure and high adaptation capability to fit specific user needs. The transaction mechanism will be designed according to a request server standard architecture (e.g. the CORBA architecture of the Object Management Group).

Aim of the project is the adaptation and integration of groupware tools to an integrated system, which will act in a distributed environment and provide advanced techniques like workgroup and workflow management. It will support multilingual presentation and video-conferencing facilities to enhance the coordination between the related working groups.

Today such a global solution does not exist. Existing systems offer less functionality and are e-mail based, thus handicapped in terms of data handling and performance. As the approach of VENTO is new in the market and will add a significant value to cross-organisational cooperation, we are ensured of a very successful exploitation.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
