The Millimeter Wave Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy as a Powerful Tool for the Exploration of Molecules

Objetivo

By one of very important key for understanding biological processes is knowledge of structure of bio-macromolecules. These molecules have optical activity asymmetry which is connected with macromolecule structure and they absorb across the millimeter wave part of the spectrum due to collective vibrational modes. It is supposed that there will also be significant circular dichroism - differential absorption of left- and right-handed circularly polarized light. Since the biological material is chiral, this millimeter wave circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy would be a powerful tool for exploration of biomolecules. The very first millimeter wave spectrometer will be built. In addition, a packet of programs for driving the whole spectrometer and for analyzing obtained spectra will be developed. The last scientific objective will be measurements on interesting chiral molecules. The obtained MCD spectra will be proof that the constructed MCD spectrometer is sensitive biospecific tool. The experimental MCD spectra will also be compared with the simulated MCD spectra for determination of absolute configuration of molecules.
