Bridging the gap between INnovative entreprises and financial inVEstors in the emerging ICT markets of SaTellite applications

Objetivo

In the ICT sector, whether in the USA, Japan, or Europe, innovative services are already in use, based on large scale space-based investments: they involve earth observation, telecommunication, navigation, timing and positioning satellites. In combination with the advent of powerful handheld terminals and the demand for ubiquitous services, it is expected that info-mobility applications will reveal new sources of business in the years ahead, using particularly the EGNOS and future GALILEO systems.

Hence, such satellite-based capabilities must be seen as incomparable, new and unique opportunities for Europe to enhance economic development in the ICT-based knowledge economy. This growth potential has already been grasped by many incubating structures in Europe. Yet, the actual business growth rate appears below expectations. Europe must overcome intrinsic innovation financing barriers to seize these new business opportunities faster and with more economic impacts.

Several members of the ESINET network have joined under the leadership of EBN to find solutions in order to characterize and remove these barriers in a coordinated way. Specific and generic features of the barriers to innovation financing will be addressed, allowing consolidate and disseminate the knowledge components that are required to support more investments into such innovative ICT-intensive services. Good practices and guidance materials for entrepreneurs, innovative enterprises, incubators or investors, will then be developed and validated 'in vivo'.

Specific workshops will further validate and disseminate the obtained results towards key stakeholders. Policy lessons will be proposed regarding public/private partnerships able to increase the business prospects of satellite capabilities. In order to meet such ambitions, the partners will reinforce and extend the connections of the ESINET network with European investors willing to invest in such ICT-intensive services.
