Objective
The Multimedia Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Art consists of an edited reference collection of international modern and contemporary creation in the area of fine art. The product is to be available on different optonumerical supports (CD-ROM and CD-ROM XA preceding specific adaptations to CD-I). More than 2500 entries will cover artists, movements, galleries and collections from the beginning of the century to the most recent period. The provision of good audio and visual iconographic documents will enrich the textual information, and in this way allow rapid illustrated access to artists and their work, to the monuments which may have influenced them, as well as to political or cultural aspects which surrounded their creation.
Art in general, modern and contemporary art in particular, are increasingly of interest to the public. The success in museum and exhibition attendances attest to this. Information available in the area, however, tends to be fragmented and specialized. The assembly of large quantities of varied, organized information, with access modes which are at the same time both didactic and adaptable, will be of use not only to the amateur but also the more informed enquirer (where the product may provide a source of information for their work).
Based on the opinions of the project partners (Hazan, France; Akal, Spain, Videomuseum) and the British publisher Thames and Hudson, the development of an international catalogue can be forseen. This would be based on the Multimedia Dictionary and could be used as a reference for other works in this area.
