Network of excellence on superconductivity

Objetivo

In particular, the objectives of SCENET are to:

- bring together fundamental and applied, academic groups as well as industrial ones,
- transfer knowledge from academic institutions to industry,
- promote pre-competitive research among industrial groups,
- establish a technological road map for future research needs in superconductivity for industrial applications.

The Network of Excellence (NOE) proposed herein will link government laboratories, universities, and industrial laboratories of the EEC, Switzerland, and Norway. The NOE will formulate short and medium term technological goals. It will also identify those groups which have the expertise and desire to develop new competitive products for a global market.

After an enormous activity of research on fundamental aspects at a large number of places in all European countries, the application potentials for superconducting materials are now becoming clearer. Therefore, the next ten years will be for HTS applications "the decade of the market", as the past ten have been "the decade of materials science". The major task of SCENET is to single out those applications, which will allow the European industry to compete in the world markets.

The main activities of the Network will be:

- to organise 9 focused, monographic, 3-day workshops to facilitate exchange of knowledge and expertise within Europe and to help identify key areas for future collaborative research;
- to organise an annual one- or two-day conference (the one in 1997 in association with the European Conference on Applied Superconductivity) to report and discuss the recommendations of the various working parties/workshops, and to provide feedback on how best the Network can serve the community;
- to circulate widely a regular newsletter (about 3 or 4 times a year) available also on WWW providing recent results in superconductivity, commissioned articles highlighting important new developments, information about future conferences and workshops, and information on points of contact;
- to support short term (a few weeks) visits for transfer of personnel between research groups in academia, government, and industry, and for facilitating technology transfer in every direction.

The Network will be directed by a 15-member Steering/Organising Committee of which 4 members are from industry. The industrial members represent power applications, device applications, materials processing, enabling science (including both applied and basic sciences), and education, with additional members chosen to ensure an appropriate European dimension. The Network will initially include 60 nodes from government research organisations, academia, and industry. Subsequently, membership will be open to any appropriate group by application.
