Objective
The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in collaboration with the Hellenic Oceanographers’ Association and the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development aim to undertake ‘Researchers’ Night 2008’, the network trying to raise researchers’ public recognition on Friday 26th September 2008 across Europe. Thus, the consortium intends to hold an outdoor event called ‘Researchers’ Web In Society’ (Re.Web.I.S.) in one of the most central locations of Athens, on Propylaia Square. ‘Re.Web.I.S.’ will be presented in the form of an interdisciplinary ‘web’ woven by the three partners where scientists of biology, chemistry, geology and physics will try to communicate to the public their work in relation to the natural world, as well as their involvement in the climate change and greenhouse effect research. The researchers will try to raise the alarm concerning the new global changes in a comprehensible, lay yet scientific, and at the same time festive way highlighting that science is the means for the achievement of a better life and future. On the entertainment aspect, there will be three-dimensional simulations to give attendees the chance to experience certain phenomena, light-hearted games and performances. Therefore, ‘Re.Web.I.S.’ hopes to constitute a central massive event addressing audiences of all age categories, backgrounds and interests mingling them with researchers, giving them the chance to interact with scientists in a relaxed atmosphere.
