The multispace project for quality in multimedia products

Objectif

The MultiSpace project is an initiative to promote improved quality for multimedia applications and systems within Europe. Of particular importance is the assistance to SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) producers to achieve the confidence of new clients.
Objectives
The MultiSpace project will develop an approach for describing the quality of multimedia applications and systems, including the components and objects within them. The Approach will consider technical issues, user-centered issues and contextual/social issues. Priorities for its adoption will be established. The entire Approach will be made public.
The MultiSpace project will also provide methods and materials that support quality improvement. The project will deliver these as a preliminary version of the 'Multimedia Quality Box'. The methods will be suited for subsequent experimentation, improvement and exploitation. There will be data definitions that support the MultiSpace Approach, including prototype versions of methods of improved requirements specification and quality definition for multimedia applications/systems and their components. The Multimedia Quality Box will also make provision to include methods for the testing and evaluation of applications/systems against these requirements. In addition the consequence of these quality-orientated actions upon project management will be supported by drafted methods for configuration control, risk management and product sizing. There will be training materials targeted at different audiences. The MultiSpace project will also adapt intelligent tutoring technologies to conform with and demonstrate these quality concepts. A demonstration version of the 'Quality Tutor' will be produced to show that it is possible to teach the concept of quality in multimedia through a media making favourable use of the MultiSpace Approach.

Approach
The MultiSpace partnership involves a merger of multimedia expertise, quality management expertise, quality management expertise (especially from the software industry) and experience and contacts with SME multimedia developers, suppliers and users across Europe. The MultiSpace Approach will also be influenced by the games, cultural, educational, film, music and photographic industries. The methods included in the Multimedia Quality Box will mostly be existing methods, integrated, adapted and verified so as to provide best possible support for the MultiSpace Approach.
Exploitation
The commercial result of the MultiSpace project will be the materials within the 'Multimedia Quality Box'. These materials will be further improved by partners in support of consultancy and training, for their third party services for testing and evaluation, and for in-house use in developing multimedia applications and systems.
Technology transfer
The MultiSpace project will perform widespread technology transfer to the European multimedia community of the MultiSpace Approach. The scope and methods involved in the MultiSpace Approach will be published first on the World Wide Web, and later on other commercial media. The project will build a simple network of users and contacts in related areas of work, especially concerning quality within multimedia application and system development. The contacts will include producers, authors, purchasing bodies and researchers.
The project will also establish a group of affiliated organisations and projects to advise and assist in the development of the MultiSpace Approach. Confidential information will be exchanged with the affiliates. The MultiSpace project is already affiliated with ESPRIT project 22292 'SPACE UFO'.
