First Aid for the Shipping Industry on CD-I

Objective

The proposal is to create a programme on CD-I which will be a reference and training aid for people from all nations working in the shipping industry. The package will help train workers in essential first aid techniques.

At present, ship workers at sea have little or no access to professional medical help. Medical emergencies are handled largely via radio telephone links with professional advice on shore. The programme proposed will, for the first time, deliver first aid training to groups of workers with varying levels of literacy and with different mother tongues. The training will be delivered in a highly visual and demonstrative way. If the programme is successful, it will have a major impact on all workers who operate in remote locations. Only information globally agreed between first aid authorities across Europe will be included.

The Association of Greek ship owners have expressed strong interest in the project; the immediate market the programme would meet with support from the Association would be 3 000 ships from the Greek merchant fleet. The project is seen as an innovative and catalytic use of multimedia in areas which it has not yet reached.
