ESAP-NutRes has been a collaborative staff exchange programme between the Division of Human Nutrition, Wageningen University, the Netherlands (P1), the Eidgenossische Technische Hochshule (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland (P2), and the North-West Universtiy in Potchefstroom, South Africa (P3). The overall aim was to build up and extend long lasting collaboration between partners as a basis for investigating the causes, consequences and solutions of malnutrition in developing countries. The program was focused on researchers who are at the beginning of their carreers and included PhD students with ample support from senior staff. A total of 54.48 months of exchange took place involving a total of 23 individuals, including numerous short visits from senior staff for supervision, seminars, workshops and graduation committees. The exchange programme has resulted in the formulation of three new collaborative projects, two of which have already been funded, and various other ideas are still being explored. The exchange programme has intensified the existing collaboration between partners and has provided a strong basis for further collaboration.
