East European Co-operation Network for International Joint Training in FP6/FP7 Food Quality and Safety for EU-Russia-Ukraine-Armenia-Belarus (R-U-A-B) Countries

Final Report Summary - INJOY AND TRAIN (East European Co-operation Network for International Joint Training in FP6/FP7 Food Quality and Safety for EU-Russia-Ukraine-Armenia-Belarus ... Countries)

The INJOY AND TRAIN project was a 24 months Specific Support Action (SSA) which aimed at improving the quality and quantity the participation of researchers, multipliers and NCPs in the food sector from R-U-A-B countries in European research.

To achieve the overall objective, a multi-skilled consortium, led by an expert institution in EU research policy, was established in order to pursue three main work packages covering:
i) Creation of a pro-active network of researchers and multipliers in R-U-A-B countries.
ii) training of researchers, multilpiers and Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) NCPs from R-U-A-B countries in the legislative and institutional environment of the food sector in Framework Programmes (FPs). Member State consortium partners will train R-U-A-B project partners who will then train the R-U-A-B researchers and multipliers. iii) Awareness raising in Europe of skilled and potential partners from R-U-A-B countries available to take part in the food priority of FPs.
The strengthening of the ERA, stimulation of international cooperation and policy support represent three interdependent pillars of INJOY AND TRAIN.

INJOY AND TRAIN contributed towards increased KRUAB participation in EU FPs by directly assisting and coaching research partners from these countries. The project facilitated the exchange of knowledge among researchers, multipliers and small to medium enterprises (SMEs), while promoting the competencies of KRUAB countries. It also supported capacity building and encourages the engagement of skilled potential partners, while providing extensive know-how on submission procedures.

An established multi-skilled consortium is the impetus behind the project's success. The group comprised nine partners from nine countries. The consortium created a proactive network of researchers, multipliers and SMEs in KRUAB countries, and trained them in the legislative and institutional environment of EU framework plans. A further benefit was the creation of research partnerships between the two groups of nations, with participants from the agriculture, food and biotechnology fields in training workshops.

The effective dissemination of information was a significant part of the project. This was achieved through the project's website (which is in English and Russian), and by issuing a quarterly electronic newsletter which actively informs those registered with the INJOY AND TRAIN database about the project's progress. INJOY AND TRAIN strengthened cooperation between the research communities of the EU and the five former USSR countries by forging links across the region. However, this goes beyond promoting learning and technology and organisational innovation. The project was also instrumental in developing human and institutional potential at both regional and international levels.

INJOY AND TRAIN offered strategic support by guaranteeing a proactive network of researchers, multipliers and SMEs in KRUAB countries, and by taking a direct approach towards operators in the food, agriculture and biotechnology sectors. This served to develop new and safer food production chains and foods. The building, strengthening and securing of these partnerships is of importance because it helps to reinforce the European Research Area (ERA), which aims for better coordination of research activities and the convergence of research and innovation policies, at national and EU levels. INJOY AND TRAIN project is, therefore, helping to develop a vibrant European knowledge-based economy, by bringing together science, industry and other key players to make the most of new and emerging opportunities. In this way research, cooperation and innovation breed success, and being a good neighbour makes sound economic sense.
