Speech recognition over the telephone line

Objective

The proposed project will pick up where project COST 209 "Man-machine communication by means of speech signals" left off.

At present, automatic speech recognition (ASR) suffers from a peculiar and methodologically distressing dichotomy. Two very dissimilar schools of thought have both been applied to the ASR problem: the knowledge-based approach and the pattern recognition approach.

Recently, a third distinct approach to automatic speech recognition, using neural networks, has been proposed. Neural networks consist of a very large number of nodes, where each node is connected to a number of other nodes, and the task-specific knowledge is coded by the weights on the inter-node connections. The weights are adjusted by an adaptive training procedure and recognition is carried out by applying an input on certain input nodes and observing certain output nodes.

It is still not clear whether the neural network approach to automatic speech recognition can be classified in terms of the two methods above or whether it really represents a fundamentally new and different strategy. The few attempts that have been made to introduce speech recognition for a telephone network service have not been very successful.

The aims of the project will be the following:

1. The overall aim of the project is to compare different strategies e.g. expert systems, pattern matching and neural network approaches for speaker independent speech recognition,

2. To determine how different approaches are affected by transmission characteristics,

3. To identify other factors, e.g. background noise, that affect speech recognition.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
