Objectif
The GUIDE project aims at establishing Europe as the world leader in the use of Portable Digital Assistants for museum visitors to not only enrich the visit experience but also to enable them to take away a Personal Catalogue in attractive paper form (or an electronic version) containing only the information they require on objects or themes of particular interest to them, with an emphasis on the use of narratives to stimulate and educate and entertain them as well as encouraging repeat visits - either in person or increasingly over the 'Infobahn'. The latter is seen as complementary to the GUIDE PDAs since it is increasingly clear that electronic visits are no adequate substitute for the actual visit, except for disadvantaged people, and indeed there is emerging evidence that electronic visits lead to higher numbers of 'physical' visits.
The GUIDE approach is to combine two innovative systems already pioneered by the developer SMEs in the Consortium:
1. A portable device enabling the visitor during the visit to select its objects and themes of interest and then obtain a Personalised Catalogue. An early prototype has already been developed in the special East German VAMP project supported by ESPRIT.
2. Digital Audio Guides pioneered by GUIDE SMEs in Italy, Spain and the UK.
GUIDE will be driven by the requirements of its museum partners to provide greater value to their visitors, the Consortium including not only two museums already taking a leading role in the application of new technologies in the museum field - the Jewish Museum of Vienna and the National Museums of Scotland, plus a special GUIDE Tuscany Museums User Group, co-ordinated by the University of Florence, building on its similar previous work with the Uffizi in a number of EC supported projects, as well as contributing advanced scientific and technological expertise.
Rapid effective exploitation is a top priority for GUIDE and a key role of VASARI Enterprises in the project is to ensure this, not only by ensuring that the project has a high 'showcase' profile during its course using the EVA Conferences across Europe (Brussels, Berlin, Florence, London, Paris and Thessaloniki already planned for 97 and 98 plus others it is hoped) but also then using them as a distribution channel for GUIDE.
A demanding workplan using concurrent engineering approaches calls for:
- GUIDE first 'demonstrator' prototypes developed and installed in 3 Reference sites in Vienna, Edinburgh and Florence in mid-98.
- GUIDE second 'experimental' prototype in these and additional exhibitions in late 98 for final user trials, including 'readiness to pay'.
Consideration will be given to the formation of a European Economic Interest Group for commercial sales to begin in 1999.
The technology to be developed and tested in GUIDE is not restricted to Museums & Galleries since it should be applicable, with appropriate modifications and extensions, to other fields such as industrial exhibitions/fairs as well as historic monuments, houses, castles and other cultural heritage sites.
