A dedicated network of incubators detecting new FP7 opportunities for SMEs through connecting existing regional clusters in biotech, renewable energies and IST

Objective

DETECT-it 2 aims to ensure, that the EC Business Innovation Centre (BIC) network of industrial incubators and their regional client base of SMEs are fully prepared to take full advantage of the first calls of FP7. In order to achieve this objective, DETECT-it 2 will build on ETI call) in which a network of 30 BICs across Europe was mobilized. Since the kick-off of this project, nearly 1000 SMEs have completed a detailed audit specifying their sectors of interest and their R&D skills and competencies.

DETECT-it 2 aims to take full advantage of the operational systems and SME database developed in DETECT-it 1 to introduce a new work programme. This new programme will be substantially different in that it is geared from the outset towards preparation for the first calls of FP7. In addition to the IST and renewable energy sector, biotechnology for health will be targeted as a priority area in response to the needs of the BIC SME client base. Over half of the consortium will be made up of new partners who will inject fresh ideas and new skills into DETECT-it 2. Over 600 new SMEs will be targeted to participate. These SMEs will be encouraged to develop 300+ ideas for new research projects and to submit 1000+ expressions of interest.

The focus of resources will be placed firmly on the bottom up approach of developing "SME intensive" FP7 projects through connecting regional clusters. At all stages of DETECT-it 2, the direction and success of the project will be achieved through advice and guidance from a specialist and highly experienced panel of NCPs and FP6/FP7 experts. A core team of the best performing partners from DETECT-it 1 will participate to transfer knowledge and skills learned from the past. EBN plays an active role in networking clusters with academic, investor and corporate stakeholders.
