Final Report Summary - PHAGODC (Integrative phagosomal biology: antigen presentation and developmental programs in dendritic cells)
PHAGO-DC investigated the molecular basis of phagosome functions in dendritic cells and how their regulation affects antigen cross presentation. Cross presentation is required for the initiation of most cytotoxic immune responses, playing a critical role in our defense against virus, intracellular bacteria and tumors, for example. The project provided a first analysis of the cross presentation capacity of lymphoid organ dendritic cells in humans. It also identified new players in the pathway, including Sec 22b, a critical regulator of the molecular interactions between the ER and phagosomes. This pathway and the identified dendritic cell populations represent new potential targets for immune-intervention in infection and cancer.
