A model has been established for the development of distributed supervisory control systems which addresses the problems of application fault tolerance, distributed control structure and reliability. The project has also developed an associated methodology and prototype simulator based on a general mathematical model of plants.The model emulates control at all levels of the factory manufacturing process. It addresses the data flows between these levels with particular emphasis on the self policing of the software components of the system to provide application tolerance.The simulator is used to investigate the implications of real implementations in a variety of manufacturing environments and provides a means of testing design criteria throughout the implementation of a control system application.
