Gauge fields and strings

Objective

It is known that strongly coupled gauge theories have a dual, holographic, description as string or gravity theories, but the duality is well understood only for fairly unrealistic theories. This project tries to improve our understanding for more realistic cases.

Concretely, the dual of QCD should be a five dimensional theory, so it is necessary to deal with strings in less than ten dimensions (the so-called non-critical strings). We plan to research in this non-critical duality. In particular, we want to engineer and analyse solutions corresponding to N=2 and N=1 cases. The relation to well studied gauge theories should be useful to provide a better understanding of the physics of non-critical strings.

Moreover, problems related to the holographic descript ion of fundamental matter and the construction of metrics and gravitational solutions with other interesting gauge theory duals will also be addressed. The deepening in the knowledge of the amazing web of dualities should help to address problems in gauge theories, string theories, geometry and even cosmology.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
