Intelligent actuation and measurement (IAM) Action Group addresses industrialization of IAM technology supporting control, maintenance and technical management (CMM) as users need it for automation systems using; intelligent transmitters and actuators, distributed in plants and connected through digital communications networks. IAM is one of the biggest challenges for industry since the introduction of Digital Control in the 1960s. The world of instrumentation is undergoing a major paradigm shift as embedded intelligence and Fieldbus communications allow migration of functionality into all parts of distributed automation systems. This is a huge opportunity to meet user requirements for IAM more completely. But to exploit this technical potentiality well, industrial IAM technology is required which provides all the items needed to fully solve the advanced user needs. Users see many possibilities for integration CMM using IAM. At the same time they are aware that existing offerings from device suppliers are only partially suitable to meet their needs. Suppliers of automation devices are searching for guidance on real user needs to develop their devices to serve selected applications throughout equipment life cycles. Many have technological solutions but do not fully know the way Users want to apply them. Users and Suppliers need IAM standards to support system solutions which are more effective and more maintainable, whilst being based on devices from multiple suppliers. This is particularly important for SMEs who need clear interfaces and tools for easy integration of their products into a complete IAM system Europe is leading the way with strategic projects defining and focusing the future for IAM industrialization. Basic results, such as reference frameworks and models, way of working and prototype products are available to show the way and to solve initial problems.
