Objective
We propose to achieve the creation of a two-species molecular Bose Einstein condensate, consisting of fermionic Li and Sr. The project will be conducted in the Ultracold group at the university of Innsbruck, under the supervision of Prof. Rudi Grimm.
The molecular system is a promising candidate for the study of new physics with ultracold heteronuclear molecules. Especially interesting is their Bose condensation, since the high mass ratio, as well as their dipolar properties, allows manipulation of the interaction strengths. On the other hand, laser-cooled alkaline-earth atoms are stimulating a growing interest in the field of atom physics.
Quantum degeneracy of alkaline-earth atoms has not been achieved so far and appears as a motivating goal for experiment s with Sr. The project is a logical next step in the current state of the art research in ultracold molecular physics, and opens a great deal of new directions. The creation of heteronuclear molecular Bose condensates gives the premises for an unprecedented opportunity to investigate chemical physics and high-resolution spectroscopy of coherent molecular systems.
For the applicant, the project will lead to a collection of experience in the fields of cooling and trapping of atoms and molecules, as well as expertise in the state of the art methods for molecular BEC formation. The long-term goal is to investigate coherent control of molecular reactions in ultracold systems.
