Home, exile and multiple belongings in African migration narratives in Europe

Objetivo

The object of our proposal is African migration in Europe. Using a multidisciplinary approach, which draws upon studies in anthropology, sociology and psychology, we propose a comparative analysis of prose texts in English, Italian and Spanish produced by African authors currently based in European countries (we will focus mainly on autobiographical texts, but will also consider fictional representations).

We intend to investigate the experience of expatriation in different European countries, the recreation of home in exile, the perception of the host country, the process of adjustment to the host culture, the intersections of race and gender in the construction of identity in new locations, and the transcultural and transnational dimensions of African migration. Our final aim is to individuate differences and parallels across countries to determine the feasibility of a theoretical discourse on Afro-European identity.

With this project we want to create new fields of expertise, we want to extend the scope of cultural and literary studies to relevant societal issues, and we want to promote a new area of research by opening a new perspective of analysis and inscribing the study of African migration literature within the larger field of European Studies.
