To achieve a sequence of efficient and selective catalytic conversions, highly ordered multi-catalyst structures are required. Despite the tremendous progress in transition metal catalysis, which has already resulted in several examples of efficient cascade reactions, the level of control of selectivity in multiple step transformations still needs a lot of improvement.
In this project we aim to achieve efficient cascade reactions on unsaturated carbohydrate substrates by assembly of multiligand systems on nanoparticles. Polydentate ligands having different donors at well-defined positions will be designed using dendrimers as support.
This will result in controlled construction of different complexes at specific locations of the transition metal nanoparticles . By just changing the properties of the ligand one transition metal can be used for different catalytic transformations.
Moreover, catalyst decomposition can be prevented since the nanoparticles can function as the 'storage' for latent metal centres that would otherwise precipitate from the reaction medium and be depleted from a continuous flow membrane reactor.
