Suppliers and manufacturers sharing information over networks

Objective

The overall aim of the SAMSON project is to develop an open information system for use within European industry. SMEs in the same industrial sector will derive business benefits from integrating and sharing information resources, while maintaining their independence and protecting commercially sensitive data. The concept will be demonstrated by application to one specific sector-Surface Engineering-but it is anticipated that the results of this project will provide a model for much wider exploitation within many different industrial fields.

Surface Engineering is a complex industry in which access to information from a variety of sources is of prime importance. Surface Engineering companies are often involved with a wide range of industrial sectors, a range of technical disciplines (e.g. wear, corrosion), and employ a wide range of materials (e.g. plastics, metals). Furthermore, the equipment used is often complex, involving automatic handling (robotics) and electronic control systems. Finally, companies tend to be involved in many functions from design and R&D, through to production. However, this is also an industry with a generally poor IT base and one which makes very little use of available technologies to gain access to this critical information.

World Wide Web-based technology from the University of Southampton-the Distributed Link Service-will be used to develop a European sector-wide intranet for Surface Engineering SMEs who will share essential information on manufacturing and design processes, materials and practices, while at the same time ensuring the security of commercially sensitive information resources.

The SAMSON Project brings together organizations from four EU member nations: AT Poeton, the co-ordinating partner, Euromat, Flametal, VCIL and Comint are all SMEs in the Surface Engineering sector. Each has identified the business benefits to be derived from the use of IT for increased information sharing within the sector. CA Technology is also an SME, providing consultancy in a wide range of areas for the Surface Engineering sector. CA Technology will assist the other SMEs with the changes required to exploit fully the transition to a technology-based information management and exchange practise. Technology support for the project will be provided by the PAC, a not-for-profit institute of the University of Southampton specialising in identifying, evaluating and applying advanced IT systems and software for the benefit of business and industry.

The Surface Engineering SMEs expect to derive two major benefits from this project:
- to establish hybrid Surface Engineering processes based upon the practices of individual SMEs combining skills for particular customer requirements;
- to counter the threat posed to European markets by developments in the Far East.

Exploitation of the SAMSON Project's results will be twofold: firstly, the Surface Engineering SMEs involved will benefit directly from access to information which was previously unavailable, enabling them to save time and resources by learning from the experiences of other companies in the sector; secondly, CA Technology will establish a subscription-based service based upon the network set up during the project. Subscribers to the service will be able to participate in exactly the same way as the project partners, thus increasing the benefit to those companies involved and at the same time facilitating the on-going dissemination activity which is a key part of the Project.
