Objective The aim of the project is the development of novel catalytic phases based on the immobilization of chiral dendritic catalysts in ionic liquids as well as on the surface of macromolecular polyelectrolyte layers. These will establish novel types of biphasic catalyst systems for a variety of stereoselective transformations. Beyond the narrower goals of the proposed research, they provide an opportunity to investigate the way the microenvironment controls the catalytic behaviour in structurally well defined systems. The types of reactions to be studied, asymmetric hydrogenations and hydroformylations, are largely well understood catalytic processes which provide the point of reference for the investigation of the effects of catalyst fixation to dendritic support and the consequences of their immersion in the coulombic environment of an ionic liquid.
