Objective
- Impact of hazardous wastes on environment: studies of migration, retention and transformation of pollutants.
- Development of toxic waste management support decision systems (OPM and EM).
Progress to end 1990
The possible migration of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) congeners to ground water has been evaluated. A preliminary quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) has been derived and the soil-water PCB partition studied. One article is in print in the J. Environ. Toxicol. Safety and two others have been submitted to Toxicol. Environ. Chem. and Chemosphere.
The analysis of PCB congeners in various environmental matrices has been developed and validated through several interlaboratory comparisons leading to one article in the Int. J. Environ. Anal.Chem. and two others submitted to Sci.Tot. Envir. and to Int. J. Environ. Anal. Chem.
The Oil PCB Manager system (OPM) has been developed in two versions (DOS and MacOS). The available versions include the basic module; the achieved functionality is sufficient for experimentation with industrial and public users.
The development of the stochastic finite element model (FENSUN) for application to the diffusion of inorganic pollutants in soil porous media and in water has been completed.
The fate of coal fly ash constituents in sandy soils and their effects on physical and agronomic soil properties have been investigated and the trace metal specification in soil and sediments studied in the frame of a laboratory intercomparison exercise.
The influence of the physical properties of a retention matrix (ordinary Portland cement) like porosity, density and compressive strength of cylindrical specimens has been evaluated by dynamic leaching procedures at various temperatures and at different preparative conditions on immobilized wastes.
An international agreement for the proposal as an EUREKA project for the construction of an analytical mobile unit has been reached and the technical project nearly completed.
Detailed description of work foreseen in 1991 (expected results)
- Field lysimeter experiments to study migration of selected pollutants.
- Application of soil diffusion models to anthropogenic toxic organic compounds.
- Use of model colloids to investigate mechanical and physico-chemical filtration processes.
- Completion and calibration of a gamma-ray attenuation device; development of analytical techniques based on supercritical fluid extraction and new hyphenate techniques.
- Evaluation of the effects of waste incineration temperatures and procedures onthe retainment of toxic inorganic elements by selected sorbing matrices.
- Experimentation of OPM with AEM Turin and Lombardy Region Authorities. Design and implementation of Risk Priority and Container Diagnosis modules.
- Construction of an analytical mobile unit.
Short description of evolution of work in 1992
- Quantification of the geochemical barrier towards the transport of colloidal and complex species.
- Field validation of laboratory experiments and their application for prevision al purposes.
- Studies on the leaching properties of matrices containing real wastes.
- Local Emergencies Management Module for expert systems.
- Tests on the mobile analytical unit.
