Objectif
The objective of this project is for a number of manufacturing SMEs in the UK to introduce an IT system to control their manufacturing data, as supplied by their design offices. All of the SMEs in the consortium are involved in the design and manufacture of products, and currently do not use IT to control this part of their business process. The project coordinator, the University of Hertfordshire, and the Best Practice Coordinator, are both members of ENIMM. ENIMM is a European Interest Grouping, whose mission is to teach and disseminate information on business process control and supply chain management.
The efficiency of each business process affects the overall performance of any company. Hence significant savings can be made if key internal business processes within the supply chain are well defined and controlled. This has led to the development of many different IT software packages, for example manufacture resource planning (MRP), product data management, and sales order enquiries. For manufacturing companies one of the key causes of scrap and waste can be directly attributed to the poor control of manufacturing data. Large companies and SMEs are therefore now looking at introducing IT in to their business to control design office data. The 6 manufacturing SMEs involved in this project believe that their waste, which is between 5% and 10% of their turnover, can be significantly reduced by the correct use of procedures and IT in this area.
The project will concentrate on defining the problem, and then developing the most suitable IT solution. The complete system will ensure that internal departments work to correct, up to date information. The project coordinator and the SMEs will collectively source the software company that has an IT solution that most closely matches their requirements. In the implementation phase the software package will then be modified so that it meets all of the SMEs exact specifications, and then finally the IT solution will be implemented on each of the SME sites.
The dissemination of the results will reach many SMEs throughout Europe, who understand the importance of supply chain management, and how IT can help their businesses.
