The Process Improvement Experiment (PIE), AMPIC "Application of Metrics for Process Improvement for safety Critical software" should be of particular interest to organizations which are developing safety critical software and also to organizations which are considering implementation of software metrics. The PIE has been performed within the company Navia Aviation. The USLS-department (R&D-department developing Satellite navigation based Landing System) which is a sub-section of the overall R&D-department has been running the PIE very successfully in a pilot project developing "highly-safety critical software" for the next generation of Instrument Landing Systems which is based on satellite navigation. During the PIE, a whole new set of standards, methods and tools which support the life-cycle process for "highly-safety critical software" has been developed and implemented. This new process has now been approved by the certification authorities. A collection of software metrics has been integrated in the new process from day one. These metrics have been used to establish a defect prevention system, to spot areas in the process which are ineffective and to support estimation. As a result of this development, the USLS-department has become the leading department in the company in respect of the quality of the software development process. It is also now able to improve the process continuously based on much more refined experience data than the company otherwise possesses. This ability has been used to tune the process in different areas.
