Factmerchant-electronic commerce at work in Europe

Objective

The objectives of FACTMERCHANT are to exploit existing technologies and protocols to demonstrate and promote the use of an integrated platform for Electronic Commerce. This platform will incorporate sophisticated searching of business information, secure messaging and automated multi-currency billing and collection over the Internet. As part of the Pilot, implementation guides and models for accounting related UN/EDIFACT messages will be developed. There will also be an analysis of the commercial implications of legislative differences between Member States relating to Data Protection and Cryptography.
The Project Objectives for FACTMERCHANT are as follows:
Demonstrate an integrated platform for Electronic Commerce for searching and manipulating both real-time and non real-time financial and business information.
Demonstrate the commercial potential of FactMerchant by attracting and retaining commercial users across the Community both during and after the Pilot.
Analyse the commercial implications of differences between Member States in legislative attitudes relating to Data Protection and the use of Cryptography.
Demonstrate the use of Public Key Cryptography and Digital Signatures to provide authentication, confidentiality, integrity and non-repudiation on the Internet.
Demonstrate the integration of software from international credit card companies with Public Key Cryptography and Digital Signatures, to provide secure, integrated automated multi-currency billing and collection mechanisms.
Analyse differences in accounting standards and terminology across Europe, develop user implementation guides & models for the following UN/EDIFACT messages for accounting application; BALANC, CHACCO, CHAMAP, DEMDOC and INFENT.
Disseminate results and generate increased awareness within the Community of the potential for profitable Electronic Commerce both within Europe and with global trading partners. This will be achieved by developing an interactive Website and taking part in appropriate forums during the Pilot. It will also include co-ordinated promotion of different aspects of the FactMerchant system including: the application of state-of-the-art technology to provide sophisticated searching capabilities; the application of cryptography to provide secure e-mail and EDI messaging; and secure automated multi-currency billing and collection using credit cards and SET.
The result of this project will be to create greater European awareness of the potential for profitable Electronic Commerce both within Europe, and between Europe and its global trading partners. The FactMerchant brand will be used to launch a product portfolio specifically targeted at SMEs across Europe. The purpose of this service is to encourage better decision making by smaller companies by facilitating easy, cost effective access to quality business and financial information. For this marketplace, both factors effect use.
IIMC propose to sell its technology and information solution as developed in the course of this pilot, to both European SMEs and large blue chip organisations. After the Pilot, Cetima, EDIPartner and Origin intend to act as marketing and sales channels for IIMC, thus providing a pan-European distribution infrastructure. Both EDI and security consultancy opportunities are expected to result from such sales. The consortium intend to capitalise on dissemination and promotional activities carried out during the pilot, and retain on a commercial basis, the significant number of users we expect to attract during the Pilot.
//OBJ_OBJ_TXT The overall purpose of FACTMERCHANT is to demonstrate a cost effective, easy to use, integrated information and communications solution for both SMEs and larger organisations within Europe. FACTMERCHANT will provide access to world-wide branded business and financial information, including financial and credit analysis, market and broker research, news and financial rates. Electronic Commerce offers significant attractions to European companies, particularly those in peripheral regions within the Community. FACTMERCHANT will help expose a number of practical issues slowing the development of European Electronic Commerce, including automated billing, use of cryptography and data protection.
