Knowledge-Based Real-Time CIM Controllers for Distributed Factory Supervision

Objetivo

This project used knowledge-based techniques in order to make modern production philosophies such as OPT, JIT and LOP available and operational at shop-floor level.
The involvement of Pirelli Tyre Holding within ESPRIT projects in cooperation with other consortia has been evaluated. The formulation of a comprehensive strategy with regard to the development of advanced information technology systems for manufacturing has been achieved, after a detailed examination of organisational and functional context. Knowledge-based real-time computer-integrated manufacture controllers for distributed factory supervision have been developed. Their contribution to production strategy is discussed.

This project used knowledge based techniques in order to make modern production philosophies such as optimized production technology (OPT), just in time (JIT) and LOP available and operational at shop floor level. The project adapted existing architectures (computer integrated manufacture (CIM) shell), building expert systems and design tools for workcell and shop controller realisations (distributed CIM controller network), testing the CIM controllers in small, medium and large batch manufacturing (factory implementation), developing controllers and tools towards marketable products including dedicated controller chips (CIM products). Several prototype systems have been installed in factory environments. These prototypes are being used as decision aids for dynamic scheduling, planning, diagnosis and maintenance related problems. Those CIM modules which successfully pass the factory tests will be further developed towards marketable products. The portable knowledge acquisition module (PKAM) and decision network development system (DNDS) are dedicated software tools developed within the project to facilitate the design and implementation of the CIM system described above. Those tools are part of the CIM shell, which contains knowledge acquisition tools (PKAM), a decision network analysis and design system (DSDN), a controller shell for expert system prototyping (CS) and an implementation tool for compiling and downloading controller code to target machines. The implementation of specialized artificial intelligence (AI) hardware and software is often blocked by integration problems into the existing computer environment. The project also designed special CIM-AI chips and their integration into standardized (VME bus) computer systems. The extension by AI processor cards will open new real time supervisory functions for expert systems on the shop floor.
The project adapted existing architectures (CIM shell), building expert systems and design tools for workcell and shop controller realisations (distributed CIM controller network), testing the CIM controllers in small, medium and large batch manufacturing (factory implementation), developing controllers and tools towards marketable products including dedicated controller chips (CIM products).
